Manaia Whale Bone Necklace

Beautiful Manaia design with paua shell eyes. This unique piece is carved from sperm whale jaw bone found on the shores of the Far North of New Zealand. The Manai is the spiritual guardian and protector. With the head of a bird, the body of a human and the tail of a fish which represents the sky, earth, and sea.

Hand-carved by Sitiveni Tupou, a Tongan-born artist based in New Zealand. Tupou has been carving bone since the age of 14, learning from his father, a master with over 40 years of experience. Each piece reflects Pacific traditions, blending his skill, cultural heritage, and artistic talents to create beautiful carvings.
